“5 simple steps to kick start your home workouts in 2015” by Kelii Grauer

2015 is here, so time to hit the gym! Or is it?

All too often I hear people and friends saying how hard it is to find the time to go to the gym, packing into that sweaty, crowded class and not achieving results they want.Kelii70 2

Working out at home is becoming a popular solution for when you’re time poor, sick of forking out $30 a week for a gym membership you don’t use, or simply wanting to try something fun and different. Most dance fitness home workouts require no equipment, are a fraction of a gym membership, plus you can work out whenever or wherever you want without the throng of muscles and sweat of other people.

If you’re new to working out at home, here are five steps to get you started.

  • Set your goals – it’s always great to set the bar high, but the only way we can reach our destination of that perfect dancer’s body is to have clearly defined goals to help us reach that point. Start by making your goals achievable, but challenge yourself. Don’t go all out saying, “I will drop 5kgs in my first week!” If you’re over ambitious, you may find yourself pushing too hard and not seeing the results you’re wishing for. Some examples of SMART goals may be:
  • “I will commit to 3 Dance Cardio classes on Monday, Thursday and Saturday this week” – be definitive and make sure you stick with the goals you set
  • “I want to burn 300 calories this workout” - Know how many calories your wish to burn during a workout and wear a device to track this.
  • “I want to improve the muscle definition in my upper legs this month” - Goals to promote endurance, improve muscle tone and increase metabolism.
  • Make a plan – Now that we have our goals, it’s time to make a plan. If you’re working out from home with us, planning is essential to keep you on track. Home from work late a few evenings this week? Little ones running around that afternoon? Travelling between cities for those big meetings? You can work out anytime, anywhere so think ahead, block out the time you need and commit to it!
  • Learn the basics – haven’t worked out in a while or trying a new regime to mix it up? Make sure you familiarise yourself with basic movements and warm ups. New exercises and workouts may have different movements your body may not be used to, so be sure to warm up first and start slowly before jumping straight into it. Tutorials are available and encouraged to attend. To get the most out of your workout and see the most benefits master the technique of each exercise.
  • Work with what you have – the beauty of home workouts is that they can be done anywhere and everywhere. If you’re at home, make sure you have plenty of space and have look around at what you can use – that kitchen bench or chair back makes a perfect ballet barre. If you’re taking your workout outside, that park bench is ideal for warming up and stretching too.
  • Have fun! – working out isn’t meant to be a chore! Dance fitness workouts are about letting loose, having fun and getting fit and healthy at the same time. Remember to smile and love your journey to the New You!
